Chapter One-Miss Moran

The first school bell rang.

"Hurry, Margo, remember Mrs. Thornton told us that we were having a homeroom visitor this morning and she didn't want any of us arriving late."

"Randy, where is Lewis?" I asked, although I knew the answer.

"Late," Margo said, as the three of us ran through the Willow Springs Elementary School playground. Margo, Randy and I made it to our seats just as the final bell rung. Lewis wasn't in sight.

"Welcome children. Take your seats." Timmy and Tru were tossing a baseball back and forth between them near the rear seats. They hurried to their seats in front.

"We have a guest this morning. Miss Moran, from the Acorn to Oak school for homeless children." Mrs. Thornton said, pointing to the pretty blond woman standing by her desk. She ignored Timmy and Tru.

"Welcome Miss Moran." The class said.

"Good morning, children. I'm delighted to be here. Mindy…uh…Mrs. Thornton, and I used to be roommates in college." Miss Moran said, turning to Mrs. Thornton who was standing beside her and patting her hand.

"She told me that her and Mr. Brown's sixth grade classes might like to adopt the Acorn to Oak school as your winter class project this year." Miss Moran continued.

"Will we be like Big Brothers?" Monroe asked, just as Lewis slipped into the classroom. Mrs. Thornton looked at her watch then at the large classroom clock on the rear wall, she shook her head then sat down in her chair behind her desk. Miss Moran sat on the edge of the desk slightly swinging her left leg back and forth.

She wore a bright yellow linen pantsuit, a pale yellow silk blouse and a real pearl necklace around her neck. Mom taught me to recognize real gems. There were so many street merchants on the Avenue of the Americas who try to sell young girls, like me, fake jewelry during the holidays, that Mom insisted that I know exactly what I'm buying if I ever were to buy anything for her or Dad on the Street.

Not that I ever would. We New Yorkers are very smart. I'd know to go to a real store and have the present wrapped in very pretty wrapping with a big bow. Miss Moran reminded me of New York and of Mrs. Burns, the school nurse from my old school. Mrs. Burns always wore linen pantsuits, which Mother said was impractical because at least once a week some small kid would throw up on her and all over her pantsuits.

She always looked perfect. I never saw any throw up on her or on her brown penny loafers. Miss Moran wore brown penny loafers with a bright shiny penny in each shoe. I liked her right away.

"Not exactly. You won't be adopting a specific child. Instead you'll be making things for the children's Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays." Miss Moran said, answering Monroe's question.

"Laura, I've tried to teach the children the importance of volunteering and giving back to their community. These children enjoy new challenges. I think that your school project is just want is needed to get them involved in a holiday project."

"We welcome all the help we can get. Since we don't know how many children will be attending the Acorn to Oak school, in December…"

"Why don't you know how many kids will be there?" Timmy asked, rolling his baseball back and forth on the top of his desk.

"We rarely have more than 30 children even during the most difficult times."

"Laura, you might want to tell the children about Acorn to Oak." Mrs. Thornton said.
